Art Media is in the business of selling tools
and materials for creative expression. We do this
through informative, inspiring presentation, personalized
service and educational opportunities.
A Brief History of Art Media
art media was founded in 1974 by former
University of Oregon art students Gail Vines,
Kathleen Christian, David Mosher and David McNiven.
Our Name
The name "Art Media" was presented to us by Gail's
mother, Madelle(an avid cross-word puzzler) and
the vote was unanimous in favor.
Art Media opened its doors at 808 SW 10th Avenue
in Portland, Oregon in July, 1974. Our original
space was 1,000 square feet and we filled it to
the brim with art supplies. Gail and Kathy worked
in the store during the week and the two David's
helped out on the weekends. By 1978 sales were
steadily increasing and the store was outgrowing
its space. Art Media moved to 820 S.W. 10th in
the summer of 1978 and by 1979 David Mosher had
joined Kathy and Gail working full-time in the
store. The space next door was leased for additional
space in 1980.
In 1986 Art Media had once again outgrown its
space. We found the perfect location around the
corner at 902 S.W. Yamhill, remodeled the space
and moved that summer. We were no longer thought
of as the little Art Store on 10th street and
in 1989 we were named Downtown Retailer of the
Year by Portland's Downtown Retail Council.
On May 1, 1993 we opened our first satelite
store at 2710 SW Cedar Hills Blvd. in Beaverton,
Oregon. On March 1, 1997 we opened our third location
in the Clackamas area of Portland.We are now looking
forward to the future and filling the needs of
our wonderful customers with a great selection
of art supplies and helpful, knowledgeable service.
